Boxcar Children (series)

The Boxcar Children is a series of books that was started by Gertrude Chandler Warner. As of 2011, there are currently 150 books, 19 of which were written by Warner and 21 of which are Boxcar Children specials.

History

When Warner was a schoolteacher in the 1920s, it occurred to her that there were no entertaining books for students just learning to read. She set out to write her own, reading it aloud to her class as she wrote in order to make it easy to understand. This resulted in the first book, The Boxcar Children, published in 1924. Because of its popularity, it was republished in 1942, and eventually a whole series followed, beginning with the publication of Surprise Island in 1949.

After Warner's death in 1979, the series ended for some time. In 1991, Scholastic began hiring ghostwriters to write new installments under Warner's name, beginning with The Haunted Cabin Mystery. The most recent installment is 2011's The Great Turkey Heist, and more books are planned for the future.
